Many of us complete different modalities of training throughout the day and until very recently, it was thought that the order of this was irrelevant. Now we know that isn’t the case.
Typical training days include a mixture of resistance and aerobic exercise, targeting different energy systems and intracellular metabolic pathways. Both modalities are important for improving different aspects of performance, but, there are potential negative crossovers between these metabolic pathways.
Recent evidence suggests that performing resistance exercise before endurance exercise is superior for maximising adaptations (at the mitochondria and muscle fibre levels). So, don’t go for a run before your squats, get in the weight room before and finish with your run – you’ll reap the benefits over time…
